OUR WINERY - HISTORY - NEIGHBORHOOD

The Sattlerhof winery is located south of Gamlitz, on a steep hill with a wonderful view of southern Styrian country side. The locality is called Sernau, and the street number is 2 for the Sattlerhof, which indicates that this is a century-old address. The Family ownership of the estate can be traced back to 1887. In1968 Ing. Wilhelm Sattler and his wife Louise decided to replant the unused location at the Sernau site. Ing. Sattler, one of the Doyen of the Styrian wine scene is credited as the founder and father of the “Steirische Klassik” line which are fresh and fruity wines with strong varietal character, well balanced acidity and dry finish. Willi Sattler jun. who is now in charge of the winery with his wife Maria added the vineyard specific varietal wines that are powerful, obulent and have long storage potential. A perfect addition. Willi jun. has been in charge and is attending to the Sattler vineyards since the age of 22. He had successfully completed the renowned wine college at Silberberg and in his relentless passion is trying continuously to improve the style of wines by location and type.
Our impressive underground cellar, which we build into the Searnau hill, enables us to improve our wines even further. Investments into the most modern equipment, an optimum in the working environment and the utmost use of environment friendly energy also assist in the furtherance of the quality of our wines.
The white wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The, "Styrian KLASSIK" wines are bottled young and show a maximum of fruit and freshness.
The more powerful wines are harvested vineyard specific and are as such identified on the label like Kranachberg etc. Depending upon grape variety the wines are submitted to a biological acid reduction after the fermentation and developed in Barriques, or they mature in the large wooden barrels.
The small amount of red wines is due to the climatic and geological conditions, which are far better suited for the white wines. Willi Sattler believes that Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) and the St. Laurent variety are the ideal red wines for this location.
“SATTLERHOF BRUT” is the sparkling wine made out of Morillion (Chardonnay) and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) grapes and of course made in the traditional method of bottle conditioning “Champagneoise”
The first wines of the year – the Noveaus – here called “Steirischer Junker” are usually bottled at the beginning of November right after harvest.

Specific Vineyards :
Pfarrweingarten Kranachberg Sernauberg
We cultivate a total of 20 ha of vineyards of which 3 ha are newly planted. Most of them are in the 3 important locations. In 2001 we have purchased an additional 5 ha at the prime location of the Kranachberg. This area will be newly planted with Sauvignon Blanc in the year 2002.
The Sernauberg is a southeasterly facing extremely steep slope (up to 70% inclination) , and has a loamy, sandy soil. At 380 meters above sea level a more aromatic Sauvignon grows here as well as the grapes for the KLASSIK line for Welschriesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Muskateller.
The Pfarrweingarten is a small southerly facing location (altitude 310 - 370 m above sea level), which is managed exclusively by the Sattler estate. The protected position, the sandy soil offers outstanding conditions for extract-rich, full-ripe Sauvignon Blanc and grapes of the Burgundy varieties.
The Kranachberg is located between the villages of Gamlitz and Leutschach and its highest points reaches 580 meters. Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) are cultivated here.
